The continuing rain and tropical moisture doesn’t bring summer to mind, but it is, in fact, the first day of the season.
Aside from the humidity, the weather isn’t cooperating with the date.
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City issued a flood warning for the Nancy Creek West Wesley Road near Atlanta in Fulton County until further notice.
Minor flooding of residential yards occurs along the creek upstream and downstream from the gage on West Wesley Road, NWS said. This includes Nancy Creek Road and Ridge Valley Court. Portions of The Westminster Schools athletic fields upstream from the gage will begin to flood.
Spotty showers are expected to last through the weekend, Channel 2 Action News reported, but the good news is showers are nothing compared to Tuesday’s torrential downpours that slowed traffic in the metro area.
“The wind is light, just no ventilation out there,” Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said. “It is sticky, stuffy. It’s going to stay that way for the next few days.”
Moisture from Tropical Storm Cindy over the Gulf of Mexico isn’t helping matters.
There is a 60 percent chance of showers and storms Wednesday and Thursday.
“It’s going to be the wettest on the southwest side (of Atlanta), and south of I-20,” Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said, “and up toward the north, a little bit drier for today.”
Fulton County has already picked up more than 3.5 inches of rain and Newton County has gotten more than twice that amount. Parts of metro Atlanta could get an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain, Channel 2 reported.
Flooding could affect poor drainage areas, creeks and streams, Channel 2 reported.
Widespread flooding led to nearly three dozen rescues Tuesday in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. A family was trapped in their home and 27 people were stranded at an office complex.
Downpours also caused the foundation of the Parc 1000 apartments in DeKalb to collapse, Channel 2 reported. The Red Cross is helping residents who were displaced from the complex in the 1000 block of Montreal Road. About 12 units were affected.
