The Emerald Princess anchored in Cannes, France, the last port stop in the Mediterranean before it crossed the Atlantic. Transatlantic cruises often run at full capacity because thousands of sea lovers are willing to chance the weather for the rewards of the laid-back journey with long days afloat. During the last seven days of the cruise to Florida, six were at sea.

The Princess has several decks available for sunbathing.

Privacy is plentiful at the aft end pool decks on the cruiser as it made its way across the Atlantic Ocean from Lisbon, Portugal. The 17-day cruise began in Venice, Italy.

Ponta Delgado in the Azores, one of the few stops for the Emerald Princess before a trek across the Atlantic Ocean to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Cruise lines such as the Emerald Princess reposition their ships between winters in the Caribbean and summers in Europe. Repositioning cruises usually attract an older, quieter crowd of coffee-drinkers, novel-readers, gamblers, card-players, deck-walkers and nappers who want few, if any, port stops and organized activities. The cruises tend to cost less than action-packed excursions.
