Omaha: Born from railroad's success, this city has blossomed

Discover Omaha, Nebraska, a city built on the success of the railroads. Today, the city offers many attractions, from a world-class zoo, a terrific art museum, interesting boutiques, hundreds of restaurants and the fine arts.

Omaha's Cornerstone Mansion, now a bed-and-breakfast inn, was the first house built in what became known as the Gold Coast. The wealthy Yost family, who were prominent in the 1800's, built this 17-room Gothic Revival-style home in 1894 as a wedding gift for their only daughter, Bertha Yost Offutt.

The interior of the mansion is almost identical to what it was when the Offutt family lived there.

A view of Omaha's skyline and Gene Leahy Mall. In addition to shopping, the mall has two huge slides suitable for kids and adults.

First National's Spirit of Nebraska's Wilderness and Pioneer Courage Park begins with these sculptures depicting wagon trains headed west. The park winds across several blocks as the wagons spook the bison who startle the geese who fly into the buildings.

The Durham Western Heritage Museum housed in the beautifully restored Art Deco Union Station, has preserved the main waiting area to resemble the 1940's era. Statues of soldiers who were being shipped off to the Pacific Front are in the museum with speakers that tell their stories.

Tucked among Lauritzen Gardens' more formal plantings are little oases like this, featuring a stream and a statue.

One of Omaha's popular eateries is Delice European Bakery Cafe, which offers a tempting array of quiche and sweets.

The Old Market houses boutiques and restaurants in what were once grocery warehouses. Some of the old signs are still visible on the red brick walls.
