Frank Lloyd Wright's home, Taliesin, in Spring Green, Wis., sits in the southwestern Wisconsin valley where many of his mother's relatives lived. Originally built in 1911, the house burned and was rebuilt twice, in 1914 and 1925.

At Taliesin, Wright tested his ideas about building in harmony with nature. Nestled on a hillside overlooking the river, Taliesin has features such as cantilever roofs, wide windows, great room and an open floor plan that became some of the architect's trademarks.

Wright tended to obscure the entrances to his homes using overhangs and other elements to compress the space around them, directing visitors inside, as evidenced here at Taliesin. By alternating compressed and open space, Wright guided people through his buildings.

Wright used glass to great effect in Taliesin's living room, where tall windows provide natural light, which is defused by the overhanging roof so that the house remains cool.

This agricultural wing at Taliesin once held stables, a dairy and a hayloft. Later, when Wright established his architecture school, the space was converted to housing for apprentices.

A wall is being lifted by tree roots at Taliesin. Wright integrated natural elements such as trees into many of his buildings. However, that has created some structural issues at Taliesin as the trees have grown and put pressure on the house.

An Asian statue at Taliesin. Wright was a great enthusiast of Asian art and amassed a significant collection. A number of artifacts remain at his estate in western Wisconsin.

The stone used in the courtyard patio outside the library runs into the architect's bedroom to the right of the library, joining the interior and exterior.
