Family homestead a treasure trove

Nina Frey and her family developed the Kennesaw subdivision called Freys Farm so that other families could enjoy the picturesque neighborhood.

Freys Farm isn't your typical neighborhood. Nina Frey and her two sons, Steve and Tim, developed the Kennesaw subdivision after her husband, John Steve Frey Jr., passed away in 1990. They built homes on the 50 acres the family originally called Belle Hall Farm, which had been their homestead for 37 years. "I love it out here," she said. "You feel that you are out in the country because all of the lots are large with lots of trees."

Nina Frey has lived in her modified Greek Revival home for the last five years in the Freys Farm subdivision. The home is decorated with antiques that Nina has been collecting for about 50 years.

"I wanted our living room to be a place where the family could hang out and relax," Nina said of her living room.

Frey calls her dining room a multi-function room. "We can eat in the room and clear the table and play bridge," she said. "I like the aspect of having two separate tables but I can easily seat 12 in here if I need to."

Frey prizes a 1745 German painting that she found about 40 years. Its beauty was in the ugliness of the portrait. "I wasn't sure what it was about the painting but something struck me about it. When I gave that painting to my husband for Christmas, my husband said, 'Well, she sure is ugly.'"

The spacious master bedroom features a four-poster bed with a separate seating area by the window, which takes advantage of the natural light that streams into the room.

The sleeping porch is one of the beloved rooms of the home because it features antiques from Nina Frey's family that have been handed down to her over the years.
