Druid Hills family shows off remodeled home

Ben Logue and Lilly Cannon purchased their Druid Hills home in 2002 and have spent the years since in a massive remodel. They and their children Connor, 10, and Sophie, 8, will have their home featured in this weekend's Druid Hills Tour of Homes and Gardens and Artist Market.

While they liked the brick home's traditional exterior, the inside has a more modern layout with the addition. They added a new kitchen and great room, master bedroom and garage-studio at the rear of the property. "We wanted to keep elements of traditional, but have it be more eclectic on the inside because that's more our style," Cannon says.

Cannon, an artist, has decorated much of the home with her work and that of friends. The foyer is lined with some of her mixed-media pieces, giving the space an airy, gallery-like feel.

The living room is symbolic of the homeowners' varying tastes. Contemporary sofas and chairs are paired with a Chinese altar table and traditional elements, such as the coffee table.

Cannon's thought-provoking "anti-Barbies" can be found throughout the home.

The sunroom carries the home's casual, comfortable feel. Pet beagle Bella is a fan of the textured rug.

Cannon's work is shown at the Sandler-Hudson gallery, though she displays this piece, "The Competition," at home.

The dining room strikes a traditional-meets-artsy feel with red walls, an upholstered wingback chair and eclectic artwork. This space is part of the original home, built in 1929.

Logue and Cannon worked with Steve Knapp of Knapper Construction for most of the remodel, which included this new kitchen and adjoining family room.

Cannon and her friends saved up wine and champagne corks to make this corkboard. She laughs when explaining it didn't take as many months as one might think to have all the supplies she needed.

The floor-to-ceiling mantel matches the wood used in the kitchen cabinetry, adding a cohesive look to the family area. Logue says this is where they spend most of their time. "I always wanted to have a home where my kids' friends wanted to come and hang out," he says.

The farm table adds charm to the casual dining area.

Connor walks past the family photos that line the second-floor hallway. All four bedrooms are located on this floor, which is a combination of old and new.

The master bedroom was among the new additions to the home. Cannon isn't a fan of curtains, thus this space gets plenty of morning light.

The spacious room accommodates seating and built-ins. Cannon created the framed mirror hanging above the bed.

The new bath has a luxurious tub and glass-enclosed shower.

They kept the pink striped walls for daughter Sophie's bedroom, though they're contemplating a switch to blue, Sophie said. Interesting objects, such as these angel wings, are found throughout the home.

Logue, who owns a commercial real estate firm, and Cannon made use of their long, yet narrow property by building a garage and artists studio at the rear of the lot.

In Cannon's immaculate space, she draws and imagines such creations as these snowglobes.

Cannon arranges a collection of drawings. She often hosts group classes in her studio.

The rear of the studio overlooks a forest and is the perfect respite. "It makes me feel like I'm in a treehouse," Cannon says.
