Discovering the Niagara Wine Trail

Nearly a dozen wineries have opened their doors in the Niagara Wine Trail in the past decade, seven of them since 2004.

Three of the wines offered in the tasting room at Spring Lake at Varallo Vineyards in Lockport, N.Y. The Italian family discovered that the sandy clay soil and climate are best suited for riesling and pinot noir.

Thousands of years ago, the rich deposits left by the receding glacier created the fertile beginnings for growing fruits and premium grapes. The Niagara Wine Trail is located a half-hour from Buffalo and Niagara Falls, 90 minutes from Rochester and two hours from Toronto.

The Winery at Marjim Manor in Appleton, N.Y., is close to the shores of Lake Ontario. Autumn is a good time to visit these wineries, which are all located in Western New York's rural Niagara County.

Vizcarra Winery at Becker Farms in Gasport, N.Y. has a more rustic feel. Oscar and Melinda Vizcarra specialize in fruit wines.
