A classically untraditional home in Buckhead

Robbie and Anne Colgin waited patiently to own the Buckhead home known as Tusquitee. It will be featured on the April 6 Buckhead in Bloom tour. Lewis "Buck" Crook of Ivey and Crook designed the Southern Classical Revival style house in 1952.

A brass rail lines the steps up into the home's foyer from the front door. The door separating the foyer from the living room echoes the classical motif of the front portico. Family portraits include Oakland Plantation owner Alfred Wellborn and his daughter, Mary Jane Wellborn Cochran.

The doorway between the living and dining rooms also reflects the classical motif. A pair of antique gilded mirrors flanks the portal to the dining room, which features a crystal chandelier and two murals.

The formal dining room features a crystal chandelier and two late-17th century Japanese screens depicting the annual Gion harvest festival in Kyoto. Anne Colgin acquired the screens from the estate of the late decorator David Byers.

This guest bedroom, dubbed the Governor's Room, includes artifacts from the life of Lt. Colonel James Milton Smith, a Confederate Army officer. The brass bed once stood in the Georgia Governor's Mansion during the term of James Milton Smith, who served as governor from 1872 to 1877.

Anne Colgin's grandmother, Florida Wellborn Morgan, carried the larger fan during her wedding in 1903. (The fan above it was purchased.) On the table are Wedgewood barber bottles from 1867.

In the Textile Room, Anne Colgin framed a piece of her 1963 debutante gown. Also included is the wedding blouse from her marriage to Robbie Colgin three years ago. The lavender seen in the wisteria print wallpaper can be found throughout the room.

The Garden Room is Anne Colgin's favorite. She commissioned artists Catherine Arnett and Jim Chadwick to paint the floor and ceiling.

In the downstairs den, arched doorways and blond paneling are accented by coffered ceilings in an area defined by its equestrian motif. The home gives the appearance of a one-level ranch but the extra levels add space.

A vine-covered lattice leads visitors to Colgin's rose garden, which has not yet bloomed this year. The rose garden contains 94 bushes representing about 40 varieties of roses.

The patio is cleaned in preparation for the April 6 Buckhead in Bloom tour by the Atlanta Preservation Center. Tickets are $40 for the general public; $30 for APC members. For more information: 404-688-3353 or www.preserveatlanta.com.
