Got a few hours and one tank of gas? Check out these five must-see landmarks to the Civil Rights Movement located around the Southeast.

A statue of Louis Armstrong graces Louis Armstrong Park in New Orleans. The park is on the African American Heritage Trail. Louisiana also is planning a Culinary Trail.

A statue of Martin Luther King Jr. in Kelly Ingram Park looks toward the 16th Street Baptist Church, where four girls were killed in a 1964 bombing during the Civil Rights unrest that engulfed Birmingham in the 1960s. Contributed by Alabama Tourism Department.

The Old Slave Mart Museum, located at 6 Chalmers St., recounts the story of Charleston’s role in the inter-state slave trade by focusing on the history of this particular building and site and the slave sales that occurred here. In the seven decades between the drafting of the U.S. Constitution and the Civil War, more than one million American-born slaves were sold away from plantations in the upper South to work the rapidly expanding cotton and sugar plantations in the lower South.
