Juneteenth ― in some form — has been observed for more than 150 years in remembrance of the June 19, 1865, date when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with General Orders No. 3 and the strength to enforce it. “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” Over time, it became an annual commemoration of the end of slavery throughout the country.
