The U.S. women’s soccer team will host Netherlands at the Georgia Dome on Sept. 18 in what should be the last soccer game in the building.
It is the second time the national team will play in the Dome. The team defeated Russia 8-0 in 2014. They have played in Atlanta six times and in Athens twice during the 1996 Olympics. The game time hasn't been determined.
The Dome will be replaced by Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which will host the Falcons and MLS expansion club Atlanta United. Mercedes-Benz Stadium is scheduled to open in June 2017, and the Dome scheduled to be demolished shortly thereafter.
The game between the U.S. and Netherlands could be a homecoming for several players, including Fayetteville’s Kelley O’Hara, Marietta’s Emily Sonnett and St. Simons’ Morgan Brian. They would need to be called into the team to play.
The U.S. is the No. 1 team in FIFA’s world rankings; Netherlands is No. 13. The U.S. has a 5-1 record against the Dutch.
The women’s team will begin defending the gold medal won in the London Summer Olympics in 2012 in the Brazil Summer Olympics with a game against New Zealand on Wednesday. They will play France on Saturday and Colombia on Aug. 9.
The game in the Georgia Dome is the second scheduled for the team following the Rio Games. The U.S. will play Thailand on Sept. 15 in Columbus, Ohio.
