Who are Georgia's best-ever coaches?

Photos: The AJC looks at ten of Georgia's most successful sports coaches, including Bobby Cox, Vince Dooley, Bobby Dodd and Suzanne Yoculan.

BOBBY COX, Atlanta Braves baseball (1978-81; 1990-present) - In 24 total seasons combined as Braves manager, Cox has posted a 2023-1612 record, won 14 straight division titles, five NL pennants, the 1995 World Series and has been NL Manager of the year three times (1991, 2004, 2005).

VINCE DOOLEY, University of Georgia football (1964-88) - In his 25 seasons, Dooley's Dogs went 201-77-10, won the 1980 national championship and took six Southeastern Conference titles.

BOBBY DODD, Georgia Tech football (1945-67) - Dodd followed GT legends John Heisman and William Alexander as only the third football coach at the school. During his tenure, he compiled a 165-64-8 record, leading Tech to two SEC championships and the 1952 national championship.

MIKE FRATELLO, Atlanta Hawks basketball (1981; 1983-90) - In seven seasons, Fratello posted a 324-250 record, taking Atlanta to the playoffs five times, winning the Central Division in 1987. He was named coach of the year for the 1985-1986 NBA season.

WRIGHT BAZEMORE, Valdosta High School football (1941-71) - For 28 seasons, Bazemore led the team that gave Valdosta the nickname "Winnersville." His teams went 268-51-8, winning 14 state titles and three national titles.

SUZANNE YOCULAN, University of Georgia women's gymnastics (1983-2009) - In Yoculan's 26 seasons as Gym Dogs coach, the squad won 10 NCAA Women's Gymnastics championships, 16 SEC titles and went undefeated four times. Yoculan was SEC Women's Gymnastics Coach of the Year eight times and a five-time NCAA Coach of the Year.

ERK RUSSELL, Georgia Southern football (1981-89) - Russell turned Ga. Southern into a Div. I-AA power, winning three championships (1985, 1986, 1989) with the Eagles. As head coach, he went 83-22-1.

BOBBY CREMINS, Georgia Tech men's basketball (1981-2000) - During his 25 seasons at Tech, Cremins went 452-303, won the ACC Tournament Championship three times and the ACC regular season title twice. He was a three-time ACC Coach of the Year.

BUCK GODFREY, Southwest DeKalb High School football (1983-present) - His 27 seasons at Southwest DeKalb and 240-77-1 record through 2008 aside, Godfrey has a well-established reputation for getting his players college scholarships.
