Ray Early’s 18-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter provided the winning margin to lift Furman to a 16-14 victory over host Georgia Southern on Saturday.

The Eagles (4-4, 2-4 Southern Conference) lost two fumbles, and Kevin Ellison (Habersham Central) threw an interception.

Georgia Southern, which has lost three of its past four games, entered averaging 36.4 points, but scored just 14 for the second consecutive week. Furman is 4-5, 3-2.

Irving Huggins rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown, and Nardo Govan (Savannah Christian) added 64 yards and the other score for the Eagles.

Mercer 51, Davidson 26: JeTarii Donald rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns, and caught a 57-yard touchdown pass, to lead visiting Mercer past Davidson (0-9, 0-6 Pioneer Football League).

Donald, starting for leading rusher Payton Usher (Northgate), who has a concussion, averaged 8.4 yards a carry and scored on runs of 57 and 4 runs for the Bears (8-1, 4-1).

John Russ (Mill Creek) rushed for 123 yards and two scores and added 136 yards passing.

Russ’ 30-yard scoring run gave the Bears a 30-14 lead with six minutes left in the third quarter.

Donald’s 51-yard catch from Russ pushed Mercer’s advantage to 44-20 with 10:56 remaining in the game.

S.C. State 45, Savannah State 9: Richard Cue threw four touchdown passes and rushed for two more scores to send the host Tigers (1-9, 0-6 MEAC) to their seventh consecutive loss.

Cue was 15-of-25 passing for 163 yards and rushed 17 times for 128 yards as South Carolina State (6-3, 4-1), which has won six of the its past seven games, accumulated 438 yards.

Savannah State was held to minus-12 yards rushing and 97 total yards.
