Shannon Hudson entered the Dick’s Sporting Goods store at Lenox Square on Saturday morning in search of a hat and a dry bag for her phone.
She exited with those things and makeshift poncho, a clear trash bag.
Hudson needed that poncho to keep dry on a wet Saturday morning as she walked The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race for the second consecutive year.
"The guys at Dick's were handing out garbage bags for people," said Hudson, who has overcome a horrific motorcycle accident 11 years ago.
On Saturday, Hudson wore a compression sleeve on her right leg, one of her many body parts hurt in the crash. The sleeve helps keep her leg muscles loose and eases the pain.
Last year, Hudson was nervous the morning of the race, but this time around the race felt much easier, Hudson said, as she drew on last year’s experience.
“It didn’t seem so daunting,” Hudson said. “It went way faster than it did last year.”
Hudson kept one tradition going, as she again took photos of each mile marker she passed. She posted the photos to Facebook, and by the end of the race people already had liked her photos.
Before the race, Hudson worried she might not have someone to walk with her — last year she did the Peachtree with a father-daughter combo. A couple of people from work walked with Hudson this time.
