You won't often find two Ryder Cup participants in the same Fall Series event, but the first annual McGladrey Classic at Sea Island isn't your average end-of-season tournament. This one is hosted by popular Sea Island resident Davis Love III, who has drawn a nice field for this week's event at the Seaside Course.

Love, who was an assistant captain at last week's Ryder Cup matches in Wales, will participate, as will Ryder Cup teammates Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar, who also happen to live in the area. In fact, Kuchar will sleep in his new St. Simons home for the first time this week; it was decorated while he was in Wales.

Others in the field with local ties include Jonathan Byrd and 2009 U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover. The field has six 2010 Tour winners, including Acworth's Jason Bohn. Chris Kirk, a Sea Island resident who is No. 2 in earnings on the Nationwide Tour, has been extended a sponsor's exemption. Also competing is Tim Weinhart, who is representing the Georgia PGA.

Technology

Covington-based Bridgestone Golf is ready to unveil its latest innovation for its popular B330 series of balls. A propriety new material used in the dual-mantle construction is said to offer longer distance, without giving up any feel for the 2011 versions of the TOUR B330 and B330-S balls. The new RD10 resin-mantle layers currently are used by Kuchar and will be available to the public Nov. 1.

The new balls will have a shallower dimple pattern and modified spacing that is designed to reduce spin, create a flatter trajectory and allow more roll in the fairway. "We're letting better players know that it's OK to be long," said Bridgestone vice president Dan Murphy.
