Staff writer Tim Tucker recounts the most one-sided games in the Georgia-Georgia Tech football series.
1. Georgia Tech 48, Georgia 0 (1943) and Georgia Tech 44, Georgia 0 (1944)
These two games — the first the most lopsided in series history — are listed together because of a record-keeping discrepancy. Tech counts the games in the series record. Georgia does not count them because it says its roster was depleted by World War II while Tech used players from a naval officers’ training program.
2. Georgia Tech 46, Georgia 0 (1905)
“It very likely would have been an even bigger blowout,” according to the book “Clean Old-Fashioned Hate” by Bill Cromartie, “had the game (in Atlanta) not been called because of darkness.” Tech, coached by John Heisman, finished the season with a 6-0-1 record. Georgia, coached by M.M. Dickinson, finished 1-5.
3. Georgia 51, Georgia Tech 7 (2002)
Georgia scored its most points and achieved its largest margin of victory in series history. Quarterback David Greene completed 10 of 14 passes for 205 yards in Sanford Stadium, while tailback Musa Smith ran for 121 yards. It was Mark Richt’s second win against Tech as the UGA coach. Richt’s record in the series now stands at 11-1.
4. Georgia Tech 48, Georgia 6 (1951)
Tech’s George Maloof scored four touchdowns, and Georgia’s Zeke Bratkowski threw eight interceptions as the Yellow Jackets dominated the game at Grant Field. Tech led 34-0 at halftime. The game marked Tech’s third consecutive victory over Georgia in a streak that would reach eight in a row from 1949 through 1956.
5. Georgia 47, Georgia Tech 8 (1968)
Led by sophomore quarterback Mike Cavan, Georgia completed an undefeated, albeit twice-tied, regular season with this victory in Sanford Stadium. It was Georgia’s fifth win in a row over Tech since Vince Dooley became the UGA coach in 1964. Dooley would go 19-6 against the Jackets, making him the winningest coach in series history.
