Florida State University's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston is claiming that the woman who accused him of rape last year offered her silence in exchange for $7 million, TMZ Sports is reporting.
The report has not been confirmed by other media outlets.
According to TMZ, Winston's lawyer sent a letter to FSU saying that Winston would cooperate with the school's investigation into the handling of the rape charges. But Winston wanted the school to know about the extortion plot moving forward, TMZ said.
This is the first time there's been any public discussion about an extortion plot related to the Winston rape allegations.
Below is an excerpt from the TMZ story:
According to the letter – obtained by TMZ – the alleged victim's lawyer, Patricia Carroll, demanded $7 MIL to settle her client's claims against FSU and Winston, telling Cornwell, "If we settle, you will never hear from my client or me again – in the press or anywhere."
Cornwell says he rejected her offer and 4 days later she went to the media.
Cornwell ends his letter to FSU by saying, "Mr. Winston will cooperate with the Investigation. He looks forward to clearing his name. But Mr. Winston will not walk into a honey trap. The Investigation must be a legitimate investigation."
