Former Premier League striker Kenwyne Jones is officially an Atlanta United player.

The MLS expansion club confirmed the acquisition Friday.

“Kenwyne is a player we have known about and watched for a long time,” Atlanta United technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a release from the team. “He is a big physical forward who can punish you in the air or behind the defense. We’re very happy that the timing worked out and we were able to acquire him during this transfer window.”

Jones, a native of Trinidad and Tobago who captains the national team, has played for Stoke City, Sunderland and Cardiff City in England’s top flight. He scored 86 goals during his career in England. He has 23 goals for his national team.

Jones, 31 years old, was out of contract. He did not sign as the team’s first Designated Player. He will join the team on Aug. 1 and will go on loan until January when the team holds its first training camp.

Jones becomes the team’s sixth signing, joining goalkeeper Alexander Tambakis, midfielders Junior Burgos, Chris McCann and Andrew Carleton, and forward Jeffrey Otoo. The team is also reportedly close to signing Argentian forward Hector Villalba.
