Atlanta United is close to signing striker Kenwyne Jones, according to the Washington Post.

Jones has played for numerous teams in the Premier League, including Stoke City, Sunderland, Cardiff and Bournemouth. He is a free agent.

The 31-year-old is good in the air and would bring a physical style that could work well in MLS. He has scored 98 goals in his club career.

A native of Trinidad and Tobago, Jones has scored 23 goals in 81 appearances for the national team.

Jones is the latest in a long line of players linked to Atlanta United, which will begin play in MLS in 2017. Its home will be Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta and its training center is under construction in Marietta.

The club is also reportedly on the verge of signing Argentinian forward Hector Villalba.

The team has five players under contract: goalkeeper Alex Tambakis, midfielders Junior Burgos, Andrew Carleton and Chris McCann, and forward Jeffrey Otoo.

The team also revealed its first jersey sponsor on Tuesday.

Atlanta United has steadfastly declined to comment on any players that it doesn’t have under contract.

Should Jones and Villalba sign, they could form a nice partnership for Atlanta United because of their different skill sets. While Jones is big and good in the air, Villalba is quick and plays well in space. Jones could act as a target man, knocking balls down to Villalba to create one-two combinations that can be difficult to defend.
