Georgia State coach Trent Miles and his players could do nothing but tip their hats to Alabama following a 45-3 loss in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Entering the game, the Panthers had very little shot to win, and that fact was even more apparent once the ball was kicked off.
“They did a great job of doing what they wanted to do, when they wanted to do it and my hat is off to coach (Nick) Saban,” Miles said. “I wish them the best the rest of the way.”
The Crimson Tide did what they wanted in all phases and allowed the Panthers to do nothing worth noting other than a 53-yard field goal by kicker Wil Lutz in the third quarter.
Georgia State’s defense was outmatched as Alabama scored on its first six drives, five touchdowns and one field goal.
The Panthers’ offense was overwhelmed and managed only 15 rushing yards and nearly as many punts (seven) as first downs (nine).
The season has been a bit of a struggle for the Panthers, who are off to a 0-5 start. The Panthers are in their fourth season as a program and first in FBS.
“As far as Georgia State football goes, I thought our young men competed hard,” Miles said. “When you’re playing the No. 1 team in the nation at their place and you’re a major underdog, you can’t help them, and we went out there and helped them early in the game.”
Added cornerback Brent McClendon, “We didn’t do what we were supposed to do. Kudos to Alabama. They’re a good team, and we can’t take anything away from them. We were out of place with too many mental mistakes on our part.”
Did Alabama play like the No. 1 team in the country?
“They did at times,” Georgia State quarterback Ronnie Bell said. “They got to the ball very fast, which got us to play faster. So when we get into competition with the Sun Belt, then we’ll play faster.”
