Reuters reported that NBC, the network broadcasting the game in America, decided to air coverage of the ceremony on a delay to put it in context for viewers.

If viewer tweets are to be believed, they are not having it.

In real time, the cauldron for the games have been lit in Rio since 11:15 p.m. EDT.

"It's not a sports competition," an NBC spokesperson told Reuters in an email during the ceremony. "It's a cultural ceremony that requires deep levels of understanding, with numerous camera angles and our commentary laid over it. We think it's important to give it the proper context. And prime time is still when the most people are available to watch."

As of the time of this writing, U.S. viewers have yet to see the cauldron lit.
