New ATP event coming to town?

Nine years after professional tennis pulled out of Atlanta, it will return in 2010, organizers are expected to announce today.

Representatives of the United States Tennis Association and the men's tour, the ATP, are expected to welcome the new event in a Thursday afternoon news conference.

No details were offered beyond announcing the news conference and USTA Southern section office would not further comment. But it has been reported for months that Atlanta was in line to acquire the distressed Indianapolis ATP July event. SportsBusiness Daily reported last Thursday that the ATP had sold the sanction to the event to the USTA Southern in order to move the event to Atlanta.

The last pro tournament in an area that boasts more league-level players than anywhere in the world was the Atlanta Tennis Challenge (formerly the AT&T Challenge) at the Atlanta Athletic Club. It died in 2001 for lack of sponsorship.
