Vince Dooley was one of the first college football coaches to push for a playoff though not quite the four-team version that is in place for the first time this season.

“I have long been an advocate of what has become the ‘Plus One’ system,’’ said Dooley, who was very involved in coaching and athletic director associations as well as at one time chairing the NCAA Rules Committee. “But what I wanted to see was where you took the two top teams after the regular bowl games were played and matched them off in a championship. I am not against the four-team one but I don’t want to see it get any bigger. That may happen, though, because you are going to have a lot of conferences not getting a team in. I can see where the SEC, Pac-12 and Big Ten are sort of assured of getting in a team and then the other conferences start campaigning for more teams.’’

Dooley was interviewed before the ACC Championship game but was asked what he thought about Florida State, a team that has won 28 consecutive games, falling to No. 4 in the playoff ranking system last week. What was the committee thinking?

Said Dooley, “I think that it was their response to the question: Should they be there? And certainly it is questionable.”
