The Falcons placed center Peter Konz, who didn’t make the trip with the team to London, on injured reserved and signed veteran offensive lineman Jonathan Scott today.
Konz suffered a knee injury in the first quarter against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. He returned to Atlanta to get a MRI, which revealed he needed season-ending surgery.
He walked off the field with trainers, but was later loaded on a cart and taken into the locker room. His fall on a toss sweep was similar to center Joe Hawley’s who need an ACL surgery.
Konz was taking over Hawley, who suffered a season-ending knee injury against Minnesota on Sept. 28.
James Stone, an undrafted rookie from Tennessee, took over at center and played 56 of the 66 snaps.
Konz, 6-foot-5, 317 pounds, was selected by the Falcons in the second-round (55th overall) of the 2012 NFL draft. He has played in 39 games with 27 starts at center and right guard.
Scott, 31, is 6-foot-6, 318 pounds, was originally selected by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round (141st overall) of the 2006 NFL draft.
He has played in 70 games with 35 starts as a member of the Lions, Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Chicago Bears during his eight-year NFL career.
Scott has played mostly tackle over his career, a position where the Falcons are struggling. Rookie Jake Matthews is trying to play with an ankle injury and Gabe Carimi, who’s on his third team, is just battling over at right tackle.
Scott was with the Chicago Bears in 2012 and 2013. He played for Falcons offensive line coach Mike Tice in 2012 and started seven of 12 games that he played in.
