Braves reliever Jonny Venters, 14 months after undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery and a month after having a platelet-rich plasma injection following a setback, has resumed some light throwing but doesn’t have a timetable for his return from the disabled list.
On Sunday, his third day of throwing, he said everything felt “really good” and that he had experienced no soreness from the exercise.
“Just playing light catch, trying to build the arm back up a little bit,” he said after throwing at Turner Field. “The doctor looked at me the day I started throwing before I threw and he said everything looks good.”
The left-hander said he’s noticed improvement since the PRP injection in mid-June. Venters has struggled with varying degrees of soreness throughout his re-hab.
Venters has been encouraged by his recent progress but has had no discussions about a possible rehabilitation assignment. He said he is going to be working on this toss program for “a couple of weeks,” progressing off how he feels.
“It’s just going to depend on how the elbow responds,” he said. “Obviously I want to be out there as fast as I can so we’ll see how fast it can get cranked up. Just really going to go off the feel and when it starts feeling good, we’ll get on the mound and crank it up as fast as we can.”
