Tess Davenport, a senior at Mill Creek, won the Atlanta Athletic Club Girls championship. The Vanderbilt signee shot a 1-under 71 on the Riverside Course, former site of the U.S. Women’s Open.
There were six players tied for second: Audrey Nelson of Charlotte, Phoebe Carles of Clinton, S.C., Catie Craig of White County High School, Bridget Hoang of Peachtree Ridge, Ava Merrill and Lauren Thompson of Providence Christian.
The High School Invitational, which is contested on the club’s Highlands Course, Charlotte (N.C.) Catholic won the title for the second time with a 9-under. Jack Heath was 5-under 67 and two other teammates finished at 2 under.
Finishing second was Johns Creek, led by medalist Andy Mao’s 6-under 66. Rivers Academy placed third, with Mark Brown pacing the team with a 70.
Robert Jones IV, the grandson of legendary golfer Bobby Jones, spoke to the players after the event. He emphasized controlling emotions and building long-term relationships through golf.
Following the address, Elena Denny of North Oconee and Ross Wolpert of Walton were presented $2,500 scholarships for their winning essays. Players were asked to explain how a bad break in their life led to good results, just as bad shots in golf can sometimes lead to good results.
Packer Invitational: Starr's Mill rolled to an easy win at the Colquitt County Packer Invitational at Sunset Country Club in Moultrie. The Panthers shot a 291 and coasted to a 17-stroke victory.
Kyle Bachkosky of Starr’s Mill was medalist at 1-under 71 and Luke Phillips was one stroke behind. West Forsyth got a 73 from Peyton Balent and 74 from Jason Quinlan and finished second at 308, followed by Glynn Academy at 311, Brookwood of Thomasville at 316 and Tift County, defending champion Columbus and Northside Columbus all at 317.
Buford Best Ball: West Forsyth won the 19-team even hosted at Bears Best. The unique format called for each team to field three two-man best-ball teams. Cambridge finished second with a 220, with the team of Ryan Demit and Blake Farbman shooting a 70.
