The boys state track and field championships -- aka, the Georgia Olympics -- begin today in Jefferson. First on the agenda will be field events in all classifications.
The defending champions are Parkview (Class AAAAA), Miller Grove (AAAA), Monroe (AAA), Westminster (AA) and Warren County (Class A). Here’s a breakdown of the teams and individuals to watch.
AAAAA
The skinny: Brookwood will look to supplant community-rival Parkview, last year's champs. The Broncos are led by sprinter Keenan Harp and perhaps the state's best distance trio -- Tyler Anyan, Sean Brennan and Carter Hewitt.
Other teams to watch: Wheeler, Parkview, Peachtree Ridge and Dacula
Individuals to watch: Jamal Tiller (Wheeler), triple jump; Paris Carson (Wheeler) 400 meters; Julian Vann (Parkview), triple jump; Carson Sears (Peachtree Ridge), discus; Eli Mahaley (Dacula), discus; Robert Harvey (Dacula), shot put; Johnathan Parks (Chapel Hill), 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles; Wade Voyles (Chapel Hill), 800 meters.
AAAA
The skinny: Bainbridge will look to make the leap from fifth last season to the top spot. The Bearcats could claim the top two spots in the triple jump with Delonte Martistee and Denzel Gamble, who has the longest jump (48 feet) in AAAA this season. Gamble also is a threat to score in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.
Other teams to watch: Rockdale County, Madison County, Alexander and Banneker
Individuals to watch: Chris Royster (Rockdale County), 100 and 200 meters; Dorian Harris-Powell (Rockdale County), 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles; Jamal Cooper (Madison County), 100 and 200 meters, long jump; Brian Holmes (Alexander), 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles; Robert Brantley (Banneker), 400 meters; Jamel Davis (Clarke Central), 400 meters.
AAA
The skinny: Carrollton and Monroe, last year's champion, will battle it out for the title. Carrollton is led by junior sprinter Broderick Snoody (100 and 200 meters), and D.J. Mann in the high jump and Jonathan Jones in the 110-meter hurdles. Monroe, whose girls won the title last weekend, is paced by Sir' Paul Jones (110-meter and 300-meter hurdles), Donquavious Hill (400 meters) and Johnny Moore (discus).
Other teams to watch: St. Pius, North Hall, Washington and Elbert County
Individuals to watch: Nikita Kirillov (St. Pius), pole vault; Peyton Wilhoite (North Hall), discus; Ty McCormack (North Hall), 1,600 and 3,200 meters; Antonio Goodwin (100 and 200 meters); Valdon Cooper (Elbert County), long jump and triple jump; Josh Chinn (Carver-Columbus), 300-meter hurdles.
AA
The skinny: Westminster is a strong favorite to repeat. William Barber (1,600 and 3,200 meters) leads the way for the Wildcats, and Maalik Reynolds (high jump), David Yates (pole vault) and Andrew Bridges (discus) could all take home titles. But most eyes will be on Ralph David Abernathy IV (long jump and 200 meters), one of the state's more explosive athletes.
Other teams to watch: Jefferson, North Oconee, Decatur, Brooks County and Mitchell County
Individuals to watch: Derrick Perkins (Jefferson), triple jump; Josh Kles (discus and shot put); Tyler Porter (Jefferson), pole vault; Ian Wraga (North Oconee), 800 meters; Tripp Hurt (North Oconee), 1,600 and 3,200 meters; Cameron Parker (Decatur), 400 meters; Chris Jones (Brooks County), 200 meters; Donte West (Brooks County), 110-meter hurdles; Justin Scott (Mitchell County), 100 and 200 meters.

Leading the way for the boys will be senior Colin Bishoff in the 1,600 and 3,200 and the Jenkins boys -- junior Joshua in the 1,600 and the 3,200 meters, and freshman Josiah in the 1,600. Mathew Gulley could win the pole vault, and Nick Rogers and Zack Lillie should score high in the 800 meters and high jump, respectively.
