Most of this weekend’s area and region wrestling tournaments will be held a day or two earlier this week to avoid wintry weather in the forecast starting Friday, GHSA wrestling coordinator Don Corr said Wednesday.

There are 61 boys and girls area and region tournaments statewide scheduled for Friday and Saturday. They qualify teams for state tournaments later this month.

The GHSA does not keep track of the individual tournament schedules, or which ones have been moved. The only requirement is that results are reported to the GHSA next week.

“The large majority of them, most everybody north of the airport, are moving it,’’ Corr said. “Some are waiting on the weather to cancel it and are doing it on Monday.”

About 35 of the 61 are scheduled for metro Atlanta or north of there.

Some weekend high school basketball games might be postponed, or played early, but the GHSA leaves those decisions to the participating schools.

Wrestling is different because of weight classes and requirements. The GHSA announced Wednesday that wrestlers could carry an extra pound if their tournament was moved ahead on the calendar.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
