For the first time in history, every Georgia state basketball champion is from metro Atlanta.

The 10 champions weren't that surprising, though. Only Columbia’s girls had no history of state championships from their school or head coach.

In Class AAAAA, Milton’s boys and Norcross’ girls are champions for the first time, but it was the fifth state title for Milton coach David Boyd and fourth for Norcross coach Angie Hembree.

In AAAA, Miller Grove’s boys and Southwest DeKalb’s girls repeated as champions. It was the first title for Miller Grove’s Sharman White and third straight for Southwest’s Kathy Richey-Walton.

Columbia in AAA and Wesleyan in A swept the boys and girls titles. They are the 13th and 14th schools in history to do that.

For Columbia’s boys, it was the third title in five seasons for coach Phil McCrary. Columbia’s girls, coached by Chantay Frost, are first-time state champions.

Wesleyan’s boys and girls took both titles for the second time in three seasons. It was the seventh state title for the girls under coach Jan Azar and second for the boys under Skip Matherly.

In AA, Greater Atlanta Christian captured its first boys title since 1977 under second-year coach Eddie Martin, who won three state titles at Norcross (2006-08). Buford’s girls repeated as champion under Gene Durden.

The 10 champions are from three metro counties that border each other -- Gwinnett (Norcross girls, GAC girls, Buford girls, Wesleyan boys and girls), DeKalb (Miller Grove boys, Southwest DeKalb girls, Columbia boys and girls) and Fulton (Milton boys).

Metro Atlanta schools have won 76 percent of state basketball titles over the past five seasons (38 of 50). For the decade of the 1990s, metro schools won only 28 percent (22 of 80).
