Allatoona's Yomi Adeyeye led her volleyball team to the Area 6-AAA championship, the first in the program's three-year history.
"We started out very slowly to start the day, and we had a lot of nerves, but the players came back in the end … and battled for the championship when it counted," Allatoona coach Amie Howard said.
Adeyeye had 39 kills at area for Allatoona, which fought out of the loser's bracket to win the championship.
Other volleyball updates:
- Greater Atlanta Christian also has won three consecutive area championships after defeating Hebron. Said GAC coach Kristy Shelton, "This came exactly four weeks after changing nearly everything in our rotation including setters. Our coaches and players believed in the change and were patient as we went through the fire until we were comfortable with it." At the 4-AA/A tournament, GAC's Rachel Waldrop had 86 assists, and Catherine Chason had 35 digs.
- When Woodward Academy defeated Sandy Creek for the 1-AAA championship, it was Tad Sahara's 300th win as the team's coach. Woodward outside hitter Zoey Morton had a total of 39 kills in a pair of matches against Sandy Creek.
- St. Pius defeated Riverwood for the 5-AAA championship behind the efforts of sophomore outside hitter Emily Morrison, who has been the team's leading hitter all season with kills and hitting percentage.
- Westminster defeated Lovett for the 5-AA/A championship. Said Westminster coach Jona Braden, "We showed great poise and confidence adapting and making defensive adjustments in order to counter Lovett's offensive [power]."
- Marist coach Anna Bush had kind words for Chattahoochee, which defeated Marist for the 6-AAAA championship. "They dominated us offensively and kept their level of play very high the entire match … [I] never felt we competed. They are a great team." Jennifer Carlson led Marist in digs with 11.
- Brookwood fought out of the loser's bracket to win the 8-AAAAA championship behind senior Katie Mallow. Said coach Brian Welsch, "She is a 'go to' hitter. She is smart about tipping and good with placement in those situations. She has the power game as well."
- Blessed Trinity's Ali McAlvany was named 7-A/AA player of the year. McAlvany led Blessed Trinity to the area championship, posting 25 assists and 14 kills.
Softball
St. Pius won its third consecutive region championship, the first time that it has happened in the program's history. Sophomore Natasha Sherrod batted .570 with five doubles, while striking out 21 in 16 innings at pitcher. "[Sherrod] ended the regular season in a bit of a slump, but she picked the perfect time to break out of it ... and she did so in a huge way," coach Joe Winland said.
Other softball updates:
- Milton defeated North Forsyth to win the school's first region championship since 2001.
- Wesleyan's has one of the state's top pitcher-catcher combinations. Pitcher Brittany Mitchell is 17-7 with a 2.04 ERA for the season, while catcher CaraMia Tsirigos is batting .564 with six homers.
- Harrison's Amy Koeing had two homers in one game, including a game-winning grand slam. Dresden Maddox had three hits in the win over Kennesaw Mountain for the region championship.
