Creekside High School's Josh Holsey, who is one of the state's top college prospects at defensive back, will pick between Auburn, Georgia, Virginia Tech and LSU on Tuesday afternoon.
The 5-foot-9, 180-pound cornerback has been publicly favoring Auburn and was asked if that was still the situation.
"Um, they're [the four schools] about even," Holsey said.
Georgia is the childhood favorite of Holsey, but was the last of his 24 early football scholarship offers. Holsey has never been to LSU, while his high school teammate, cornerback Davion Tookies, has committed to Virginia Tech.
Holsey had 19 career interceptions, including 9 last season as a junior. His high school coach said he's the best Creekside player "since Eric Berry," referring to the former Tennessee All-America safety who now plays with the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs.
Surprisingly, Tennessee was not among the finalists for Holsey, who said Berry is "like an older brother."
“I really didn’t look that much into Tennessee,” Holsey said. “Eric has never pushed Tennessee on me. He’s not like that. When we’re together, he’s all about helping you become the best you can be. As far as colleges, he has always said pick the school that is the best for you academically and athletically.”
Late 2011 addition
Grayson DB Denzel Nkemdiche, who committed to Ole Miss, got some good news on Monday with test scores in his attempt to meet NCAA college entrance requirements.
“He scored really well, and we’re waiting on GPA at the end of the week … but I would say it’s a ‘done deal,’” Grayson coach Mickey Conn said.
Georgia has made a late run at Nkemdiche, both offering an official visit and scholarship. But Denzel said he’s “sticking with Ole Miss.”
“It just felt right; Ole Miss did the right things, and recruited me the right way,” Denzel said. “I haven’t had any second thoughts about committing to Ole Miss. I kind of want to get away a little bit.”
His younger brother is Grayson defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, who is considered one of the nation's top college prospects for 2013. The brothers hope to play on the same college team.
“Robert’s words were ‘I can’t wait to take an official visit to Ole Miss, and have you as my recruiting host,’” Denzel said. “He’s really liking them a lot because he knows I wasn’t too sure about them before my official visit and then I absolutely loved it there. He wants to see what they are all about. He’s excited about coming to my games and everything.”
