Camden, ESPN to announce major 2010 opponent
Two-time Class AAAAA champion Camden County will play one of the nation's most famous programs in an ESPN-televised game on Oct. 1.
Camden County coach Jeff Herron wouldn't confirm the opponent but said ESPN would make an announcement this week, perhaps as early as Tuesday.
It is known that Camden County has sought games with ESPN Fab 50 national champion Don Bosco of New Jersey and No. 2-ranked Abeline of Texas. Camden also has talked with 2008 national champion St. Thomas Aquinas of Florida, Miami Northwestern of Florida, Byrnes of South Carolina and Bellevue of Washington.
Camden County has two non-region dates. The first, Sept. 3, went to Miami Central in a home game. Miami Central made Florida's Class 6A semifinals in 2009.
With Miami Central coming to Camden, it would follow that Camden's Oct. 1 game would be on the road.
Camden County, 13-2 in 2009, will return only one starter on offense and two on defense. Camden returned only six starters overall last season and surprised many with its successful title defense, especially after a 1-2 start.
"This year's team proved something to me, no question," Herron said. "They proved that you can win it with an inexperienced team as long as you get better during the season. We may not be better at the start, but I think we will be a factor in the end. The kids think we can. I'm not going to do anything to discourage that."
