Statesboro football coach Jeff Kaiser was released from a hospital Wednesday afternoon after being treated overnight for COVID-19.

''This thing is very real,'' Kaiser said in a text to ajc.com. The coach declined to talk by phone, saying he didn’t have the oxygen, but acknowledged that he had experienced moderate COVID-19 symptoms for the past nine days.

Kaiser’s team canceled its opening game last week, citing confirmed positive cases on campus and in the community that had affected the athletic program.

Statesboro boys basketball Lee Hill died Aug. 1 after fighting COVID-19 for over a month. Hill was Kaiser’s former coach, close friend and colleague as Kaiser is a Statesboro graduate who returned to his alma mater in 2016.

Kaiser said his team resumed practice Tuesday with Kaiser’s staff splitting duties. Statesboro’s opening game is now Sept. 18 at Swainsboro.
