Report: Pataula Charter football coach dies in car crash

Sept 28, 2021

Pataula Charter football coach Todd West died in a two-vehicle accident Monday evening, according to WALB-TV in Albany. The Georgia State Patrol told the TV station that West was involved in a crash involving a tractor trailer around 7 p.m. Monday.

West became Pataula’s football coach in 2020, coming out of retirement to work in his hometown of Edison, 33 miles east of Albany.

Pataula Charter superintendent Kylie Avera Holley posted condolences on the school’s Facebook page Tuesday morning.

“In the short time we were blessed to have coach Todd West as a part of our PCA family, he has made a huge impact on our students and staff,’' she said. “From the most wins ever in his first season with our varsity football team last year to being thrown into helping mold our middle school baseball team, he gave his all for his athletes and students. He dedicated his life to kids through a long career in education and coaching, even in his retirement. He will be sorely missed.”

Pataula’s football team, 2-2 this season, will play its game Friday night against Cross Keys and dedicate its homecoming to West, Holley said.

West had been the principal at Schley County High and football coach at Randolph Southern and Glascock County.
