1. Rome 45, Carrollton 27: Rome and Carrollton (ranked No. 3 in 6A last week) were the preseason favorites of the computer Maxwell Ratings to win the Region 5-6A title. Now both are looking up in the standings at Douglas County and South Paulding after Rome’s victory against 21-point favorite Carrollton. Rome lost to South Paulding 34-32 last week.

2. Houston County 20, Newton 13: A week after moving into the rankings for the first time since 2010, Newton is back out after losing to a 28-point underdog. Houston County’s victory was a big one for four-team Region 1-6A, which had Lee County (56-30 vs. Warner Robins), Northside-Warner Robins (52-7 vs. Colquitt County and Valdosta (21-0 vs. Lowndes) lose lopsided games in high-profile matchups.

3. Apalachee 22, Eastside 21: Apalachee put up a season high in points and earned its first victory, beating an Eastside team that was a 27-point favorite. Apalachee went 2-5 in Region 8-4A last year, its most region wins since going 4-4 in 2012. It was Eastside’s first region loss against anyone other than Clarke Central or Woodward Academy since 2015.

4. Centennial 33, Chattahoochee 6: Centennial ended a 23-game losing streak that was the longest in school history with a Region 7-6A victory over Chattahoochee, which was a six-point favorite. It was the Knights’ first win since beating Northview 38-28 in their final regular-season game in 2018. Centennial lost to Allatoona in the playoffs the following week.

5. ACE Charter 35, Wilkinson County 6: ACE Charter recorded the biggest upset of the week, according to the Maxwell projections, knocking off 31-point favorite Wilkinson County in the teams’ Region 7-A Public opener. It was the first victory in three games this season for ACE, which lost to Wilkinson County 32-18 in 2020. Wilkinson came into the game 2-2.

Worth noting: Alcovy, a four-point favorite, is 3-1 in its last four region games dating to last season after a 24-6 win over Rockdale County in a 3-6A game. Alcovy was 2-28 in region games from 2014 to 2019. The Tigers are 1-2 overall but 1-0 in the region. … Brookstone, a 24-point underdog, spoiled Whitefield Academy’s bid for its first 5-0 start since the program began in 2002. The Cougars scored a late touchdown and two-point conversion after a Whitefield Academy turnover and won 29-28. … Dooly County avenged a 50-0 loss to Dublin last year with a 31-28 victory in a Region 4-A Public game. Dooly County was a 15-point underdog. Dublin’s 1-3 start is its worst since the 2012 team lost its first six games in a 2-8 season. … Mays ended an eight-game losing streak that was the second-longest in program history with a 14-6 win over eight-point favorite Hapeville Charter. The game was a Region 6-4A opener, leaving Mays in a first-place tie with Stephenson. … Thomas County Central of Class 4A won 24-8 against Class 2A No. 1 Callaway, which was a 14-point favorite. Callaway won 16-14 last year and went on to earn its first state title. Thomas County Central has won three straight since an 0-2 start.
