Lowndes, the No. 1-ranked football team in Class 7A, is under quarantine and its season put on pause until Oct. 26, Lowndes County Schools announced Wednesday afternoon. The district didn’t immediately release further details.

Lowndes is 5-0 and coming off a 33-21 victory over city rival Valdosta. Lowndes also is in the top 10 of several national polls.

With practices shut down for two weeks, Firday’s game with Alcovy and the Oct. 23 games with Mitchell County are off. Those are non-region games.

Lowndes' first Region 1-7A game is Oct. 30 against Tift County.

Lowndes is one of dozens of Georgia teams that have shut down practices or canceled or postponed games because of quarantines or COVID-19 issues. The GHSA does not call for forfeits during any games that can’t be played because of COVID-19 protocols.
