Lowndes football coach Jamey DuBose resigned Thursday, citing family reasons in a Twitter post.

DuBose later told Phil Jones of ITG Next-Georgia that he is set to become head coach at Orange Beach High in Alabama.

Orange Beach, which has completed two seasons of varsity football, is a small school outside of Mobile. DuBose originally is from the city of Opp in the southern part of the state.

‘’The sudden passing of my father has given me new responsibilities and priorities to attend to,’’ DuBose said in his Twitter post. “My mom has always been here for me, and now it is time for me to be there for my mom.’’

DuBose told Jones, “It’s an opportunity close to my parent’s home and close to my mom’s doctors.’'

DuBose’s Lowndes teams were 10-2 and 10-3. The Vikings reached the 2020 Class 7A semifinals and 2021 semifinals with a region title.

DuBose came to Lowndes in 2020 from Central of Phenix City, Ala., where he won a state title in 2018 and went 66-11 across six seasons. He won two previous Alabama state titles at Prattville.

Lowndes, a Valdosta school, has been one of the most stable schools for head coaches with only five since 1976. Randy McPherson retired in 2020 after 18 seasons and three state titles. DuBose’s two-year tenure is the shortest since the school’s first coach, David Barker, lasted for one season in 1966.
