Lanier football coach Mobbs takes job in Knoxville

Lanier football coach Korey Mobbs is leaving to become coach at Knoxville Catholic. He announced his departure on his Twitter account Wednesday afternoon.

’'Although I have agonized over this decision for many days, the time is right now for me to step aside to pursue a new opportunity for my family,’' Mobbs posted. “With intense emotion and sadness, I will be move on from Lanier High School.’'

Mobbs had been Lanier’s head coach since 2014 and led the Gwinnett County program to two region titles, four 10-win seasons and seven playoff appearances in eight seasons. Lanier reached the Class 6A semifinals in 2018. NFL player Derrick Brown was the AJC’s all-classification player of the year under Mobbs in 2015.

Mobbs helped start Laier’s program in 2010 after coaching at Collins Hill (2004-09) and was promoted from offensive coordinator. Mobbs was a starting safety on Parkview’s 1997 state championship team.

Knoxville Catholic won Tennessee football state titles in 2008, 2015, 2017. The football job came open after former coach Steve Matthews resigned following a DUI arrest and drug charges.
