Newnan had gone 2-8 and 1-9 in the two seasons prior to hiring Bass. His first Newnan team went 9-1-1 with a region championship. His 1981 team reached the Class 4A championship game and lost to Warner Robins.

Bass, who lived in Newnan the past 55 years, was selected for the Georgia Athletic Coaches Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.

“Everything has to do with human relationships,’' Bass told Georgia High School Football Daily in a 2019 interview. “I used to tell my kids I don’t want you hanging around with the wrong kind of people. I want you around good people. I was fortunate. I was around good people and good coaches. ... I believe that if you help people get where they want to go, you usually get where you want to go.”

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
