Pace Academy has joined a growing number of schools that have canceled football games this week over COVID-19 concerns.

Pace Academy, a Buckhead private school, was scheduled to play Washington at home in a Region 6-2A game Friday but canceled, citing COVID-19, the school’s athletic director Chad Wabrek confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

Also canceling Wednesday were Cook, which was to play Fitzgerald in South Georgia; New Manchester, which was to play Villa Rica; and Coosa, which was to play Fannin County. In each case, COVID-19 issues prompted the decisions.

Those brings to at least 15 the numbers of teams that have called off games this week, the next-to-last weekend of the regular season.

All regular-season games canceled because of COVID-19 are considered no contests, although regions are allowed to use them to determine their playoff teams and seeds. Once the playoffs begin in two weeks, canceled games will become forfeits, ending a team’s season.

Coffee, one of the top teams in South Georgia, on Tuesday suspended football activities indefinitely and canceled its game Friday with No. 2 Warner Robins, citing COVID-19 concerns.

Others not playing include Fulton County Schools teams Centennial and North Springs, which went to remote learning and closed their school buildings temporarily in recent days because of COVID-19 cases on their campuses. Berkmar in Gwinnett County has canceled the final two weeks of its season.

Other games originally scheduled for Friday that won’t be played as planned, with the initiator of the cancelation listed first, are Johnson of Gainesville vs. Clarke Central, Stephens County vs. Oconee County, Gilmer vs. White County, Mount Paran Christian vs. North Cobb Christian, Berkmar vs. Meadowcreek, Centennial vs. Creekview, Portal vs. McIntosh County Academy, Monroe vs. Westover, North Springs vs. Jackson of Atlanta and LaFayette vs. Rockmart.

A game between North Clayton and Mount Zion of Jonesboro also is off the books, but the cause is uncertain.
