There are plenty of good opportunities to watch some good basketball this weekend.

Girls basketball

Defending girls state champion Woodward Academy will host the War Eagle Classic. Coach Kim Lawrence’s team is led by Sydney Bowles, who averages 25.4 points and 8.8 rebounds, and Sara Lewis is averaging 9.2 points.

Woodward is off to an 8-1 start with wins over state-ranked New Manchester and a loss to Maynard Jackson.

Jackson (5-1) has beaten state-ranked Lithia Springs and Chapel Hill, losing only to Class 6A Carrollton. The Panthers play next in the Christmas Showcase in Carrollton on Monday against East Coweta and Tuesday against Mount Paran Christian.

McIntosh will also play in the Carrollton tournament. The Chiefs meet Rockdale County on Monday and Dutchtown on Tuesday. Sophomore Kendall Davis (13.8 points, 7.1 rebounds) and Keara Collins (11.1 points, 9.0 rebounds) are the top scorers for McIntosh.

Greenbrier will compete in the Greenbrier Winter Classic on Monday and Tuesday. The Wolfpack will play Strom Thurmond (S.C.) on Monday and Grovetown on Tuesday.

Boys basketball

Defending Class 5A champion Eagle’s Landing will play Class 7A power Grayson on Monday at Pace Academy in the Playing for a Change Tournament.

Jones County will host the Morris Bank Holiday Classic, which includes state-ranked Southwest DeKalb. The Panthers (7-1) open the tournament on Monday against Washington County.

The Macon Showcase includes Walnut Grove, who plays Stratford Academy on Monday and First Presbyterian Day on Tuesday.

Chapel Hill will play Oxford, Ala., on Saturday in the Woodward Academy Showcase.

At the Broncos Holiday Classic at East Forsyth High School, the Calhoun boys will play Lambert on Saturday.
