Class 5A blog: What we learned this week

It was a good night for the ranked teams in Class 5A. Not only did they all win, nearly all of them won easily.

The only real close call came from No. 9 Blessed Trinity, which spotted Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy a 21-0 lead and roared back to win 24-21. ELCA scored all its points in the first quarter, but Blessed Trinity got three touchdown runs from Justice Hayes to win the game. The Titans (3-2) open Region 7 play next week at Woodland before hosting back-to-back games with state-ranked Calhoun and Cartersville.

No. 3 Cartersville (4-0) gave coach Conor Foster a victory for his birthday. ... No. 7 Calhoun overwhelmed Woodstock 56-16 as Christian Lewis passed for three touchdowns and ran for two others.

In Region 1

The three powers from Region 1 all scored convincing wins. No. 1 Warner Robins (4-0) got a pair of touchdowns from Fred Perry, two more from Malcolm Brown and two touchdown passes from Christon Lane and pounded county rival Houston County 49-9. ... No. 2 Ware County (4-0) quarterback Thomas Castellanos threw four touchdown passes and ran for another in a 32-15 win over Bainbridge. ... No. 5 Coffee (4-0) rolled past Glynn Academy 42-0 as quarterback Maurice Turner scored four touchdowns, one of them a 57-yard punt return, and Dreshawn Taylor scored on a 65-yard run.

Other state-ranked teams

No. 6 Woodward Academy (4-0) got three touchdowns from Damari Alston and ran for 278 yards in a 55-14 win over Mundy’s Mill on Thursday at Twelve Oaks. The War Eagles forced three turnovers and scored on a pick-six and a scoop-and-score.

No. 10 Decatur improved to 4-0 with a 26-14 win over Arabia Mountain. The Bulldogs open Region 5 play next week against unbeaten Stone Mountain.

No. 4 Creekside played Mundy’s Mill on Saturday. No. 8 St. Pius did not play.

In non-ranked competition

In Region 3, Jonesboro beat Banneker 28-21 to improve to 2-1 and greatly improve its playoff chances.

In Region 4, Dutchtown came back to beat Union Grove 16-7 and defending champion Jones County blew out Stockbridge 42-9.

In Region 5, Southwest DeKalb picked up its first win of the season, beating Tucker 34-9.

In Region 8, Clarke Central beat Apalachee 31-17, the biggest offensive output for the Gladiators this season. ... Loganville came from behind to beat Greenbrier 35-34 and put itself in prime playoff position.
