The state of Georgia will have a second high school football all-star game for juniors this year.
The Georgia Elite Junior Classic will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at McEachern High School. Tickets are $10, and the game will be televised by CSS.
The first-year event was organized by Score Atlanta founder I.J. Rosenberg, McEachern athletic director Jimmy Dorsey and former Brookwood coach Dave Hunter.
Some of the top players on the 70-man roster for the Elite Junior Classic are North Gwinnett offensive lineman Mitch Hyatt, McEachern offensive lineman Chuma Edoga and Alpharetta defensive end Andrew Butcher. Hyatt rates as the state’s No. 1 junior in the 247Sports composite rankings.
The other game is the AT&T Georgia Junior Bowl presented by the Chick-fil-A Foundation. It will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Grady High School’s stadium.
The co-founders for the Junior Bowl, which is in its fourth year of existence, are former NFL players Joe Burns (who played at Georgia Tech) and Izell Reese. Tickets are $15 to the game, which can be viewed online on ESPN3.
The Georgia Junior Bowl features 101 players, including Westover defensive tackle Trent Thompson, Callaway wide receiver Terry Goodwin, Carver-Columbus defensive end Mehki Brown, Mays defensive end Natrez Patrick, Langston Hughes defensive end D’Andre Walker, Lovejoy wide receiver Preston Williams and Sandy Creek running back Eric Swinney. All rank among the state’s top prospects for 2015.
The biggest winners of adding a second all-star game are the state’s football players. They’ll get more exposure to scouts and the recruiting media while playing and practicing against elite competition over the new few days.
Georgia projects to have around 250 high school seniors sign with major colleges this year.
