The best teams in Georgia high school football are beginning to settle at the top.
Only seven Top 10 teams lost their games last week. That’s after 16 and 18 were beaten the previous two weeks.
There are five new teams in the rankings, none from metro Atlanta. They are Monroe Area for Riverdale in Class AAAA, Appling County for Dodge County in AAA and George Walton Academy, Athens Academy and Johnson County for Wilkinson County, Charlton County and Marion County in A.
Expect another week of calm, as there are only four games between ranked teams. Those are No. 4 Lowndes vs. No. 8 Colquitt County in Region 1-AAAAAA, No. 7 Gainesville vs. No. 10 Heritage-Conyers in Region 8-AAAAA, No. 2 Brooks County vs. No. 8 Early County in Region 1-AA and No. 8 George Walton Academy vs. No. 9 Commerce in Region 8-A.
The top metro Atlanta game will be Brookwood (2-1) at No. 10 Parkview (3-1) for first place in Region 8-AAAAAA. Parkview is in the running for its first region title since 2004 after its upset of 2011 state champion Grayson two weeks ago in the season’s biggest upset.
Also watch for No. 1 Camden County, which travels to Valdosta on Friday. Camden has not lost a region game since 1999 but moved this season to 1-AAAAAA, often considered the toughest region in the state. Valdosta represents Camden’s first region game.
