Don’t concede the state’s rushing title to Nick Chubb just yet.
North Oconee junior Kawon Bryant is gaining ground after a school-record 368 yards Friday against Athens Christian. That doubled his rushing output for the season, putting him at 736. That’s 245.3 yards per game.
Chubb, a senior from Cedartown, has 989 yards overall, but he has played four games and has averaged 247.3.
Both made the list for the AJC/GHSF Daily’s top performances this week.
The state’s top five
- Cherokee junior quarterback Spencer Ashley was 23-of-32 passing for 455 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-41 loss to Lassiter. Wide receiver Blace Brown had 12 catches for 175 yards and a touchdown.
- B.E.S.T. Academy running back Deshawn Waller rushed for 292 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries and intercepted a pass in a 62-7 victory against McNair.
- Clarkston placekicker Santino Jerke made a 55-yard field goal in a 42-10 loss to Decatur. Jerke made a 52-yarder last season.
- Locust Grove free safety Emilio Conde scored two touchdowns, intercepted two passes and had eight solo tackles in a 27-21 overtime victory against Spalding. Conde had his spleen removed three months ago after being injured in a seven-on-seven event.
- Bryant's 368 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 28 carries in a 56-0 victory against Athens Christian.
The best in metro Atlanta
- Arabia Mountain linebacker Kayton Samuels had two sacks, three other tackles for losses and forced three fumbles in a 26-20 overtime victory against Miller Grove.
- B.E.S.T. Academy running back/linebacker Rontavious Belcher rushed for 94 yards and had two sacks on defense in a 62-7 victory against McNair.
- Eagle's Landing quarterback Bradley Dewberry was 14-of-23 passing for 206 yards and a touchdown in a 36-19 victory against Jonesboro. Dewberry also rushed for 54 yards, scored two touchdowns, made five tackles and intercepted a pass, returning it 40 yards.
- Etowah running back Brandon Engle rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown in a 31-14 victory against Wheeler.
- Lovett defensive back/running back Grant Haley had a team-leading six tackles, forced a fumble, rushed for 87 yards on seven carries and scored two touchdowns in a 28-7 victory against St. Pius. Running back Jay Harris rushed for 160 yards.
- Luella linebacker Steve Osondu had nine total tackles, a school-record 4.5 for losses, broke up a pass and made a game-sealing interception in a 24-21 victory against Henry County. Osondu has 22.5 career tackles for losses, which breaks a school record held by Georgia State defensive lineman Tevin Jones.
- McEachern quarterback Ty Clemons rushed for 135 yards on nine carries and was 9-of-12 passing for 212 yards and three touchdowns in a 43-30 victory against Marietta.
- Mundy's Mill running back Rodney Smith rushed for 157 yards on 22 carries in an 18-14 loss to Coffee.
- North Gwinnett quarterback Hayden Sphire threw six touchdown passes in a 63-0 victory against Meadowcreek. Sphire completed 12 of 15 passes for 201 yards in two quarters.
- Peachtree Ridge running back Jordan Ellis rushed for 143 yards and scored three touchdowns in a 31-30 victory against Mill Creek.
- Shiloh running back Charles Shavers rushed for 222 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries in a 21-14 victory against South Gwinnett.
- Stephenson defensive end Chauncey Rivers had six tackles for losses, including two sacks, in a 42-0 victory against Lakeside-Atlanta.
- Woodward Academy free safety Arrington Farrar had 19 tackles and an interception in a 30-15 victory against Westminster. Quarterback Terry Googer rushed for 190 yards and passed for 94.
