The Hawks hired Quin Snyder as an assistant coach Monday. Snyder is the first to join the staff of new head coach Mike Budenholzer after spending two seasons as an assistant with CSKA Moscow.
Snyder, 46, has been an assistant coach in the NBA with the Clippers, 76ers and Lakers. He was the head coach at Missouri from 1999-2006.
He was also the head coach of the Austin Toros, an affiliate of the Spurs in the NBA Development League. He led the Toros to three straight playoff appearances, including the 2008 championship game, and was the league’s coach of the year in 2008-09.
Snyder served as an assistant coach for his alma mater Duke from 1993-99.
“I am excited to join Bud’s staff with the Hawks,” Snyder said in a statement. “They are creating a system and a culture that I strongly believe in and have seen its success. I look forward to being a part of the organization and contributing to our players’ every day improvement.”
Snyder played at Duke from 1985-89 as a four-year teammate of Hawks general manager Danny Ferry.
Budenholzer, who was hired last month to replace Larry Drew, continues to work as the top assistant with the Spurs during the NBA Finals.
“Quin is an excellent addition to our staff,” Budenholzer said in a statement. “He has a very strong knowledge of the system that we will implement and his extensive experience will enhance the development and knowledge of our players.”
CSKA Moscow, the Russian team Snyder is leaving, issued a statement that Snyder will return to the United States.
“It is sad to say goodbye to Quin,” a statement from head coach Ettore Messina read. “We are losing a friend, great coach, great person who was able to establish close relationship with many of people here in CSKA. I am happy that he will continue his career on the highest level. It will be not easy to substitute him.”
Messina had been a candidate for the Hawks head coach position.
