American Heritage High School star running back Greg Bryant Jr., who played two years at Notre Dame, has been declared brain dead, the result of gunshot wounds sustained early Saturday morning, West Palm Beach Police said.
Detective Lori Colombino said West Palm police’s investigation is now reclassified as a homicide.
Bryant, 21, and Maurice Grover, 25, both of Delray Beach, were found in a black, four-door Chrysler near the Forest Hill exit on southbound Interstate 95 around 4:45 a.m.
Grover had minor injuries. Bryant, the driver of the car, was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in critical condition.
There’s no known motive for the double shooting, said police.
In his junior year at the Delray Beach school in 2011, Bryant helped the American Heritage Stallions clinch the state title with 243 yards and three touchdowns on a season-high 38 carries. That year, he ran for 2,180 yards and 35 touchdowns.
But at Notre Dame, Bryant struggled.
Early in 2015, he was found with small amounts of marijuana and ordered to pretrial diversion by a Palm Beach County judge, court records show. His coach, Brian Kelly, suspended him that year because he did not “meet expectations” and he was ruled academically ineligible, according to ESPN.
Bryant transferred to ASA Miami, a junior college in South Florida, soon after.
Last November, though, he signed with the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
“I’ve had a ton of people ask me why UAB,” Bryant told Bleacher Report. “Once I went on a visit and met them in person, I knew I was safe. I knew I was in a safe environment. They’re basically giving me a second chance.”
He was looking forward to it. In a recent tweet, Bryant wrote, “Accomplished way too much to stop here. Got so much more to accomplish.”
