Jordan Spieth showed more than a couple of signs of life Friday, roaring back from his 3-over-par 75 on the first day of the Masters to finish with a flourish by carding three birdies in his last six holes.

The second-round 69 ended a string of four consecutive over-par rounds for Spieth over the past two Masters. It also left him at even par for the tournament and brought the 2015 champion within striking distance of the lead. He trails the leaders by four strokes as only nine golfers are in red numbers.

Spieth started erratically Friday, posting two bogeys in his first four holes, but he didn’t have another blemish the rest of the way.

“We hung in there,” he said.

Spieth made up six strokes after starting the day trailing leader Charley Hoffman by 10 shots. He was angered by his bogey on No. 2, “one of the easiest holes on the golf course,” but played the remaining 14 holes in 4 under par. Fellow Longhorn Jhonattan Vegas shot a 76 for a 10-over-par total of 154 and missed the cut.

The birdie putts on 16 and 18 “were clutch to have a chance this weekend,” Spieth said. “I’m looking forward to it. I think under par still goes a long way.”
