Jordan Spieth was disappointed.

Even after a 2-under par 68 left him even for the Tour Championship. He still finished tied for 17th, a distant 12 strokes out of the three-way playoff.

There would be no repeat of his FedEx Cup playoff title. Had he played better this week, there might have been at title defense

Spieth entered the PGA Tour playoff finale seventh in the point standings. He needed to win the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club. He also needed leader Dustin Johnson finish in a three-way tie for second or worse and Patrick Reed to finish tied for second or worse. Check and check.

“This tournament, a little bummed to not have given anything a chance,” Spieth said. “Now it looks like, if I’d won, D.J., in fact at least at the present moment, is far enough down where I could have captured the cup.”

Johnson ended up tied for sixth after a disastrous round of 3-over 73 despite having the lead or a share of it the first three rounds.
