One bad hole hurt Keith Mitchell’s opening round of the U.S. Amateur on Monday.

As part of his 4-over 75, the former Bulldog All-American shot a triple-bogey 7 on the Highlands Course eighth hole.

“I didn’t play bad other than one bad hole on the front,” he said. “If I keep playing the way I think I can play I can put a good number up (Tuesday).”

That good number would be a 3 or 4 under on the Riverside Course, which would bring him to par or 1 over , a score he thinks will be good enough to advance to the first round of match play on Wednesday. Mitchell will tee off at 1:10 p.m. on No. 10 on Tuesday.

Mitchell said his game has been progressing well and that he felt confident. He has two top-30 finishes this summer.

“I know I’m playing well, I just have to make better scores,” he said.
